South Dakota is located in the Midwestern region of the United States. Named for the Lakota and Dakota Sioux American Indian tribes, South Dakota first became a state in November of 1889. While Pierre is the state capital, Sioux Falls is the most populated area with nearly 160,000 people. South Dakota is historically dominated by an agricultural economy and a rural lifestyle, although it has recently tried to diversity its economy to attract more residence. It is still quite rural, with the fifth-lowest population density among the U.S. states.
