First used by Native Americans as a way to cross the Savannah River, Augusta, Georgia is today a booming city. It is the principal city of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the second largest city in Georgia. In international circles, August is most well known for hosting The Masters golf tournament each spring. It is also the hometown of soul singer James Brown.
James Oglethorpe named the town Augusta, in honor of Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. She was the Princess of Wales and daughter-in-law of King Georg II of Great Britain. She was also mother to King George III of Great Britain. August was actually the second state capital of Georgia from 1785 until 1795.
