While located in East Central America, the state of Kentucky is officially considered a Southern state as well as being one of the country’s four states known as a commonwealth. It is today the country’s 37th largest state vis-à-vis total area and 26th vis-à-vis population. Since in the state’s pastures, native bluegrass can be found freely, Kentucky was nicknamed the Bluegrass State. Its soil is said to be extremely fertile which led to easy breeding for high-quality livestock. In terms of its resources the state is mightily abundant and has the world’s longest cave system, which is Mammoth Cave National Park as well as largest waterways and streams in the Lower 48 states. Kentucky is also well-known for its successful college basketball team.
