Las Vegas has the largest population of any city in Nevada, with over 567,000 residents in the city and about 1,866,000 in its greater metropolitan area, as of 2008. Las Vegas was created in 1905 and became an official city in 1911. Paradoxically, although Las Vegas is known as “sin city” due to its liberal approach to adult entertainment venues such as gambling, Las Vegas has the highest number of churches per capita of any major U.S. city.
