Allentown has an estimated population of 111,025. It has won the All-America City Award twice, in 1962 and 1974-1975. The economy of Allentown did well through textiles and silk in the early 20th century, helped by the opening of the Adelaide Silk Mill in 1881 (which was, at the time, one of the largest in the world). This trend didn’t last though and by the 1930s – due to the increase in synthetics – it was well into a decline. Things have changed greatly since those times and today, the main economy of Allentown is service-based.
