Columbia is a constitutional republic that has a population of more than 45 million people, making it the world’s 29th largest population and is the fourth largest Spanish-speaking community in the world. Politically, Columbia is well known for its constitutional government with the Liberal and Conservative parties being two of the most established political parties in the Americas. Historically it has unfortunately witnessed much violence due to political tensions, most notably in the Thousand Days War and La Violencia but these days this isn’t the case so much and the homicide rate has decreased almost 50% since 2002. It is today, Latin America’s fourth largest economy although ironically, nearly half of Columbians live below the poverty line.
