Tennessee is located in the Southeastern United States has a population of approximately 6 million people, making it the nation’s 17th largest state by population. The capital, and second largest city is Nashville, while Memphis is the state’s largest city. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796. In the early 19th century, Tennessee was the home of Davy Crockett, Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston and other lively American figures. It was the first state to leave the Union and join the Confederacy at the start of the U.S. Civil War in 1861.
